Fed Cup Flurry Hits Asheville

Feb 9, 2018

The 2018 Fed Cup brings international professional tennis competition to  Asheville  Feb. 10-11 for the USA vs. Netherlands World Group First Round.

The weekend competition features tennis star Venus Williams and her sister Serena, who is making her debut after maternity leave and who, on Friday, made an Asheville teen’s dream come true.

Fourteen year old Kennedi Green was chosen to select names out of the Fed Cup trophy that decided the draw.  Kennedi got to meet Team USA and even spent a bit of one-on-one time with her tennis role model, Serena Williams. “I was so nervous, I almost fainted,” said Green, “It was the best day of my life.”  Green will be a ball girl during the competition.

The public got to view the draw ceremony,  just one of many community events leading up to this weekend’s matches.  On Wednesday, students from Avery Creek Elementary School in Arden got to participate in a tennis clinic game day at the Cellular Center Exhibition Center that                                included a Q & A time with U.S. Fed Cup Captain, Kathi Rinaldi.
